Kennedy Cup

Cornhole Rules

Eligibility: All are welcome to play.  Family and friends.

It is free to play and the winning players each receive a medal and bragging rights.

Teams will be composed of 2 players randomly drawn and assigned.  Teams will then be assigned to groups randomly.  There will be a round robin in each group, followed by a knockout round to determine one champion team.  The specifics are based on the number of teams and can be found on the bracket page.

Teammates play at opposite ends of the court, standing next to a board.  Bags are tossed to the opposite board.  The front of the close board is a foul line and cannot be crossed before the bag is released from the hand.  Play consists of frames with opposing players alternating throws of 4 bags each. The team that last scored throws first in each frame.  Rock/Paper/Scissors to determine first frame first throwers.

A beanbag in the cornhole at the end of the frame (either tossed in or knocked in) gets 3 points.  Any bags on the board get 1 point.  We do not play the "hanger 2 point" rule.  Bag is either in (3) or out (1).  Bags hitting the ground first and then bouncing onto the board are removed immediately, before the next toss.

Scoring is done by cancellation scoring.  For example, if after all 8 throws team A has 5 points, and Team B has 3 points, Team A would receive 2 points (5-3) for the frame.  Since only one team can score per frame, there cannot be a tie.

The first team to score exactly 21 points at the end of an inning wins.  If they go over, they revert back to 15, and throw first in the next frame. You do not need to win by 2 or more points.

Round robin standings will determine knockout seedings.  First tie breaker, after wins, is point differential in all the team's round robin games combined.  If still tied, a one game playoff match to exactly 11, reverting to 7 if going over, will be played between the 2 teams to determine which team advances. If 3 or more teams are tied, once one team wins the tiebreaker, they advance and the remaining tied teams re-start at the top of the tiebreaking rules

Knockout bracket will continue until there are two teams remaining.  They will play 1 game to determine the champion.

Other than listed above, official Cornhole rules apply.

2023 Update:

After a long day of golf, this year's cornhole tournament was too long.  I've adjusted the bracket page to significantly drop the number of games needed to determine our winner (including random teams getting a bye into the semis in some scenarios).  I've also added easier tie-breakers. Next year I'll try to get another set of boards too, speeding play.  I dropped the scenarios for more than 16 teams.  If we ever do get to more than 16 teams, we can divide in 2, follow the bracket until each gets to 2 teams, and follow the max 5 game scenario to get to 1 winner.  If we ever hold this separate from the golf day, we can always increase the round robin games to make it longer if we want (or even have multiple tournaments on the same day).  I think these changes will make it more fun for everyone.
